  • Saturated fatty acid : Fatty acid that has no double bonds between the carbon atoms. With ALD, it is the very long-chain saturated fatty acids (saturated VLCFA) which accumulate in the body.
  • Schwann cells : Cells of the peripheral nervous system that produce myelin.
  • Spasticity : Rigidity of a group of muscles causing stiffness and restriction of movement.
  • Sporadic : An individual presenting a genetic disease is referred to as a sporadic case when no family member from the same or past generation is found after genetic study in the family.
  • Sulfatide : Constituent of the membrane of neurons and glial cells.
